Hey You -


Do you hold high expectations of yourself and others?

Do you ever feel frustrated because you know people could do better, be better and yet, they don’t?

And if you’re honest…do you hold yourself to the same impossible standard?


Yeah. Me too.



I used to believe people should know better. That they should try harder, because if they just put in more effort, they could be so much more. And then, I heard something that stopped me in my tracks:


“What if everyone is just doing the best they can with what they have today?”


Wow! Sit with that for a second.





What if every single person you’ve ever been frustrated with, including yourself, wasn’t being lazy, unmotivated, careless, or not trying hard enough?

What if they were actually… doing their best?What if today, this is all they have to give?



The Reality Check We All Need

Think about it. We all have good days and bad days. Some days, you wake up energised, you tick everything off the list and you’re patient, kind, motivated. You’re basically a walking TED Talk.


Other days? The alarm goes off, and just getting out of bed feels like a marathon. The volume of work emails makes you want to move to a remote island where Wi-Fi doesn’t exist and the smallest inconvenience has you questioning your entire life. On those days, are you doing your best? 

Yes.

Is it the same "best" as yesterday?

No.


But it’s still the best you can do today. And guess what? That’s true for everyone else too.



Expectation vs. Reality (AKA: The Source of So Much Stress)

Most of our frustration with people, ourselves included, comes from the gap between expectation and reality.


We expect: 

Our partner to be emotionally available 24/7. 

Our boss to read our mind and know when we need support.

Ourselves to operate at 100% every single day, no matter what’s going on.


Reality?


People get tired. Overwhelmed. Distracted.

We all carry unseen struggles that impact how we show up.

Nobody—not even you—can be their best every single day.



The Freedom of Meeting People (and Yourself) Where They Are

What if, instead of expecting more from yourself and others, you met people where they are right now?


Imagine how that would be, instead of judging yourself for being unproductive, you accept that today, your energy is low and that’s okay. Maybe even Instead of snapping at the barista for getting your order wrong, you realise they might be exhausted, dealing with stress, or just having an off day too. When you Bestie doesn’t text straight back, how about instead of taking it personally, you remember that maybe today, they just don’t have the capacity for a conversation.


Compassion isn’t about making excuses, but it is about recognising reality. Because when you truly believe that everyone, including yourself, is doing the best they can with what they have today, everything shifts.



What if, just for today, you approached everyone (yourself included yes!) with the assumption:


"They’re doing the best they can with what they have today."
