The Practice of Presence: Finding the Sacred in Your Morning Tea

Inside Nat's Notebook - Real Reflections for Real Change
You made tea this morning, didn't you?
Filled the kettle. Waited for it to boil. Dropped the teabag in. Poured the water. Added milk, maybe. Sugar, perhaps.
And then... what happened?
Did you taste it? Or did you drink it while scrolling your phone, checking emails, planning your day, worrying about that thing you forgot to do yesterday?
I'm willing to bet you barely noticed it at all.
Not because you're doing anything wrong. But because this is how we've learned to live - moving through our days on autopilot, consuming moments instead of experiencing them.
And here's what nobody tells you: your exhausted nervous system is starving for something you're walking past a dozen times a day.
Presence.
Why Extraordinary Isn't What You Need
The wellness industry has sold us a lie: that transformation requires something extra. Something special. Something you don't currently have.
A meditation retreat in Bali. A perfect morning routine. An hour of yoga before dawn. A gratitude journal with meaningful insights every single day.
And if you can't manage those things - if you're too tired, too busy, too broke, too overwhelmed - well, you're just not trying hard enough, are you?
Except here's the truth your body already knows: you don't need extraordinary. You need ordinary.
You need the things you're already doing, done with attention instead of distraction.
You need presence, not performance. Connection, not achievement.
And presence doesn't require anything extra. It just requires you, right here, right now, paying attention to what's already in front of you.
What Your Nervous System Is Actually Craving
Your nervous system doesn't want another app, another course, another system to learn.
It wants simple. Familiar. Grounded. Real.
It wants the weight of a warm mug in your hands. The steam rising from your tea. The first sip that's almost too hot. The way the warmth travels down your throat and settles in your belly.
It wants your feet on the floor. The texture of the carpet or the cool of the tiles. The feeling of standing, breathing, being here.
It wants the morning light coming through your window. The sound of birds outside. The quiet hum of your fridge. The ordinary symphony of a Tuesday morning in January.
These aren't distractions from the important work of fixing yourself. These ARE the work.
Because when you bring presence to the ordinary, something shifts. Your shoulders drop. Your breath deepens. Your mind quiets, just for a moment.
This is what regulation actually feels like. Not forced. Not effortful. Not something you have to achieve.
Just... here. Present. Home in your own body.
The Practice Hiding in Plain Sight
So let's do this together. Right now, if you can.
Make yourself a cup of tea. Or coffee, if that's your preference. Whatever warm thing calls to you.
But this time, don't multitask. Don't scroll. Don't plan. Don't think about what comes next.
Just make your tea with full attention.
Notice:
The sound of water filling the kettle. The click as it switches on. The building rumble as it starts to boil.
The ritual of choosing your mug. The weight of it in your hand. The colour, the shape, the familiarity of this object you've held a hundred times before.
The teabag dropping in. The first pour of hot water. The way the colour blooms and spreads.
The steam rising. The scent reaching you. What does it smell like, really? Can you name the notes, the warmth, the invitation?
The first sip. Not gulped. Not rushed. Actually tasted. Is it too hot? Just right? What flavours can you detect? How does it feel in your mouth, your throat, your belly?
The warmth of the mug in both hands. The temperature. The smooth ceramic. The way it grounds you, just by holding it.
That's it. That's the practice.
No app required. No course to buy. No perfect morning routine to maintain.
Just you, your tea, and this moment.
How Presence Changes Everything
I know what you might be thinking: "Nat, I don't have time for this. I have a million things to do. I can't just sit around drinking tea mindfully every morning."
And I hear you. I do.
But here's what I've learned after years of working with exhausted women: you don't need more time.
You need more presence in the time you already have.
Because when you bring attention to your tea - really bring it - something happens.
Your nervous system recognises safety. Your body remembers what calm feels like. Your mind discovers that it can, actually, focus on one thing at a time instead of spinning through seventeen worries simultaneously.
And here's the beautiful part: this practice doesn't stay contained to your tea.
When you learn to be present with your tea, you start noticing other ordinary moments. The feeling of warm water on your hands when you wash up. The texture of your toothbrush. The sound of your key in the lock. The weight of your coat on your shoulders.
Life becomes textured again. Rich. Real.
You're not somewhere else, worrying about the future or replaying the past. You're here. And here, it turns out, is where you've been trying to get back to all along.
#Rebel Moment
Here's your invitation for this week:
Choose one ordinary moment each day. Just one. It doesn't have to be tea - though tea is lovely. It could be:
🧡 Brushing your teeth
🧡 Making your bed
🧡 Putting on your shoes
🧡 Walking to your car
🧡 Washing your hands
🧡 Eating your first bite of lunch
Whatever calls to you. Whatever you're already doing anyway.
And for that moment - just that moment - be fully there.
Not thinking about the next thing. Not judging whether you're doing it right. Not performing presence for some imaginary audience.
Just... present. Just noticing. Just here.
What do you feel? What do you notice? What shifts when you stop rushing and start experiencing?
This isn't meditation. This isn't self-improvement. This is just you, being with yourself, in one ordinary moment.
And that, my love, is where everything actually changes.
What ordinary moment will you choose today? I'd love to hear what you notice.
Stay Blessed
