When the Light Won’t Quit and Your Brain Won’t Either

Inside Nat's Notebook - Real Reflections for Real Change

Hey You -

This week we are talking about: The Summer Buzz No One Talks About

Imagine, it’s 9:30 p.m. and the sun still won’t quit. The longest day of the year was a few days ago, the light perhaps feels non-stop, although maybe not consciously, maybe…

You’ve finally sat down. Poured something chilled, hoping for a moment of ease. The sky is glowing. The day should be winding down. But your brain? Oh, it’s ramping up. Looping through what you didn’t finish. Wondering if you’ve done enough today to earn a moment of peace.

Your body says relax. Your brain says: “Just double-check tomorrow’s meeting. And reply to that message. And maybe fold the towels…”

This is the summer buzz no one talks about. You might’ve called it excitement. Or productivity. But your nervous system is calling it something else entirely.

Sensory overload in seasonal disguise.

The Light Is Data And Your Body Is Tracking Every Bit of It

We think summer = rosé and rest. But for many of us, especially super busy, deeply feeling people?

Summer is subtle overstimulation.

More light = more input

More daylight = less wind-down

Less darkness = disrupted melatonin

More movement = less pause

Less pause = more mental clutter

More clutter = less clarity

Goodness!

And you your nervous system? It’s not checking the calendar. It’s checking for safety. And when it can’t find it, it whispers:

“Stay alert. We’re still on.”

Why You Feel Wired When You’re Bone-Tired

Your circadian rhythm—think of it as your body’s internal dimmer switch—relies on contrast.

Light + dark.

On + off.

Go + rest.

But when the light just won’t quit?

❌  Your sleep hormone, melatonin, gets confused

❌  Your stress hormones simmer quietly

❌  Your thoughts start circling like overcaffeinated pigeons

This isn’t bad “sleep hygiene.” This is your nervous system misreading the cues and staying on guard.

That golden summer brightness you’ve been bathing in? As joyful as it looks, it can hit your system like invisible caffeine. It's delicious but destabilising.

It’s Not Just the Light. It’s the Life You’re Living in It.

If your evenings feel more like a second shift than a wind-down…

If your fuse feels shorter and your attention span even shorter…

If your to-do list is shouting louder than your inner voice…

You’re not failing. You’re just carrying more input than your system knows what to do with.

You don’t need to cancel summer. Not at all.

We need the vitamin D, the sunsets, the feeling of being alive.

But what you do need is a buffer. A way to cool the noise without numbing out. A way to reset, not retreat.

You don’t need to match the sun’s energy. You don’t have to stay up just because the world is still buzzing. You don’t have to be “on” until the sky finally dims.

Summer doesn’t mean pushing harder. It means listening deeper. Let yourself find the stillness in the sunset, the calm in the breeze.

Remember, even sunflowers turn their heads away sometimes!
